Post 16 and care leavers

The Virtual School continues to support looked-after children and care leavers within education through to the age of 25. Any 16 or 17-year-old who remains in care and is attending a school sixth from or college can discuss with their Virtual School Officer their:

  • Achievements
  • Targets
  • Aspirations

The Virtual School is also in regular contact with the schools and colleges to pick up on any issues which may be affecting the young people.  Young people who decide to follow an apprenticeship or other training route into future employment can also discuss the options available with a Virtual School Officer.

16-19 year olds who are in care or care leavers are eligible to apply for the 16-19 bursary fund. The college or school student services team will give you an application form. 

If you're a young parent you can apply for a bursary and for help from Care to Learn for help with childcare costs whilst you study

If a young person decides to continue to Higher Education they will be eligible for a £2000 bursary which is paid in 3 instalments . To apply contact the Virtual School.
