The Governing bodies of maintained schools have had a statutory obligation to appoint a Designated Teacher to promote the educational achievement of looked-after children on the school roll.
Statutory regulations prescribe the qualifications and experience required of the designated teacher in school must be a qualified teacher or a head teacher or an acting head teacher
The Designated Teacher should promote a culture of high expectations and aspirations for how looked-after children:
- Make sure the young person has a voice in setting learning targets
- They are responsible for the implementation of the child's Personal Education Plan (PEP) within the school
- They should focus on how everyone contributes to promoting the child's educational achievement
- Communicate school policies to social workers and carers and ensure the school does everything possible to maximise educational stability for the child, especially by sharing information through the PEP Document
The Virtual School has a role in ensuring all designated teachers within Wiltshire are adequately trained.
