Vehicles and driving

Full vehicle maintenance services available to schools, community transport groups and academies. These services are available to other public and voluntary sector organisations which are funded by the Council.

Please refer to the Health and Safety Executive website for guidance on lifting and work equipment such as LOLER.

Wiltshire Council is licensed to operate a public MOT station at their vehicle workshops in Devizes. We are able to MOT cars, small mini buses and commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

MOT's are by appointment only and are available between 7am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

Services and Costs:

Fees are set by Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and are not subject to VAT.

  • Class IV - £45.00
    (Private cars up to 8 passenger seats - standard cars and light vans).
  • Class V - £50.00
    (Private passenger of 13 – 16 seats)
  • Class VII - £50.00
    (Commercial vehicles 3000kg - 3500kg).
  • Retest (Free) – within 10 days
  • Duplicate test certificate - £10.00

Payment

Payments can be made by cash, cheque or credit card. Cheques should be made payable to Wiltshire Council and crossed "A/C Payee Only". Cheques are only accepted with a valid cheque guarantee card.

Driver training will be offered by professionals trained to the the MiDAS standard.

The Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) is a membership based scheme that is designed to enhance minibus driving standard and promote safer operations.

MiDAS training has a number of different elements to it, these are:

  • Training and assessing drivers of standard minibuses
  • Reassessment for drivers of standard minibuses
  • Training and assessing drivers of accessible minibuses (disabled access)
  • Reassessments for drivers of accessible minibuses (disabled access)

The MiDAS training programme is split into several sections, these being:

  • Theory training
  • Driving assessments
  • Theory exam

Training takes place in fleet owned vehicles. Driver training will be tailored to the specific need of the person requesting it, more specifically this can be:

  • Training to reduce fuel consumption such as over revving and harsh braking (eco driving).
  • Reversing
  • Assessments to identify potential areas for improvement
  • Introduction to minibus driving

Costs depend on the training requirements but the standard cost is £94 per day per person.

Vehicle inspections

The areas to be inspected include but are not limited to;
•Lighting equipment
•Steering and suspension
•Brakes
•Legal signs
•Tyres and wheels
•Seatbelts
•Mirrors, fire extinguishers, doors and seats, windows and other general areas

Our staff should be expected to carry out their duties in a safe manner. We will not tolerate any abuse or aggressive behaviour towards our staff.

Hackney vehicles should be inspected every six months and will take approximately half an hour. A letter will be sent out to remind you when your vehicle inspection is due, when you receive the letter contact fleet services to arrange a convenient date and time. (Please make sure you take a copy of your current MOT certificate and identification badge with you for the inspection).

Areas to be inspected include but are not limited to:
•Tracking (security of bolts, correct type of fasteners, track damage and any other irregularities)
•Passenger and wheelchair restraints
•Wheelchair access and equipment including ramps and wheelchair lifts

The following equipment must be placed inside the vehicle for testing as well:
•All tracked seats
•Ramps
•Wheelchair tie down equipment.

WAV’s are required to be inspected every 12 months and will take approximately 45 minutes. However, it is likely that the WAV and 6 monthly inspections will be carried out at the same time in which case this will take approximately one hour. Please make sure that you bring a current valid LOLER certificate (should your vehicle be fitted with a hydraulic lift) and any type approval or body conversion certification that is relevant to the vehicle being inspected.

As with the six month inspections, a letter will be sent out to remind you when your vehicle inspection is due; when you receive the letter it will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure the inspection is carried out on time and to contact fleet services as above.
