OVO Energy Tour Series final in Salisbury proves a huge success

It was so exciting seeing the elite cyclists up close and I was shocked at how fast they cycled the route. Thank you to everyone who visited to cheer on the riders, enjoy the entertainment and soak up the atmosphere

More than 8,000 people lined the streets of Salisbury last Thursday (31 May) to watch the Tour Series final, as part of the recovery programme for the city, proving that the city is getting back to normal.

Wiltshire Council and Salisbury City Council hosted and supported Britain's leading televised cycle race series which took place in Wiltshire for the first time. A samba band, cheerleaders, a Clubbercise session, a performing arts group and lots more entertained the crowds in the Market Place throughout the day, in the lead up to both races.

Allison Bucknell, chair of Wiltshire Council said: "The day has been brilliant from start to finish. I've received such positive feedback from everyone I spoke to. This now proves beyond any doubt that Salisbury is recovering and people were happy to visit the city centre."

"It was so exciting seeing the elite cyclists up close and I was shocked at how fast they cycled the route. Thank you to everyone who visited to cheer on the riders, enjoy the entertainment and soak up the atmosphere, it was great to see so many people and see Salisbury so vibrant and busy and to see local businesses and traders benefitting as a result of the event. All the teams I spoke to told me that this was the best part of the tour series by far, they loved the accessible space offered in the Market Square and the friendliness of the crowds and asked if we would do it again. I do hope that we can host this event and once again showcase the beautiful city of Salisbury nationally and internationally."

Two hour-long highlight programmes will be replayed on TV with the men's final on ITV4 on Monday June 4 at 11pm and the women's final Tuesday June 5 at 11pm. Both programmes will be available on demand via the ITV Hub after broadcast for 30 days. Both races will also be shown on more than 100 channels across the world.
