New special needs learning facility set to open for pupils in south Wiltshire

A new spacious and bright facility for pupils with special needs in autism and mental health difficulties will open in the south of Wiltshire next spring to meet growing need for specialist education provision.

Academy Trust, Reach South which includes Springfields Academy, Magna Learning Partnership and Wiltshire Council are working together and will open Springfields South as a satellite specialist provision on the site of Sarum Academy in Salisbury.

A new building on the school site is currently being converted and refurbished.  The facility will open spring 2019 for children from primary and lower secondary age groups.

The satellite is being developed as part of the wider review of special education that Wiltshire Council has been taking forward over the last three years.  The review demonstrated a need for an additional special facility for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social Emotional and Mental Health concerns (SEMH) in the south of Wiltshire.

Springfields Academy specialises in supporting vulnerable young people, with ASD/SEMH, to access and enjoy their learning.

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children's services, said: "We have worked closely with our partners to provide this additional facility which will be a bright, stimulating environment to inspire our pupils to achieve. It is really good to work together with mainstream and special school academies to achieve new provision for children and young people in Wiltshire.

"This is a much-needed resource in the south of the county and I'm looking forward to seeing pupils settle in and use the excellent facilities in the New Year."

Jon Hamp, Springfields Academy Headteacher said, ‘We have committed ourselves to Sarum and more importantly to long term provision in the south of Wiltshire, because I want children to be in school, not in cars. Springfields South at Sarum will be part of Springfields Academy and as such, will benefit from our expertise and management. Springfields South will embody the positive, collaborative culture and ethos that we have established and value at Springfields Academy; both as a school in its own right and as an addition to Springfields Academy.
