Wiltshire Council named as finalist in prestigious Keep Britain Tidy Awards

Following participation in the Great British Spring Clean campaign, Wiltshire Council has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards Local Authority Award category.

The Great British Spring Clean is an annual national campaign that aims to bring people together to clean up the litter that blights local communities.

The strong community spirit that prevails in Wiltshire was clearly evidenced on the weekend of the 2017 Great British Spring Clean (Friday 3 to Sunday 5 March).

Volunteers across the county's 18 community areas, from schools, communities, scout groups and other organisations, organised litter picks to tackle local hot spots.

With the support of area board grants and the council's contractors, idverde, equipment was provided to assist the volunteers.

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for waste said: "The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic event and we are delighted to be named as a finalist for this prestigious award.

"Being shortlisted is a reflection of the wonderful community spirit that we have in Wiltshire, and it recognises the hard work of the 3,200 volunteers that took part in litter picks across the county, giving up their time to help make their communities a better place to live.

"We look forward to participating in another successful campaign in 2018. It would of course be much better if people didn't drop litter in the first place and that we didn't have to spend more than £2.5 million each year collecting this rubbish. Wiltshire is a beautiful county and we want to keep it that way."

In all, 152 litter picks took place throughout the county during the weekend, and the volunteers collected 3,025 bags of rubbish, with 18.15 tonnes collected in total.

Litter picks of all the main routes through Wiltshire, including the A36, A350 and A303 were also scheduled.

The 2018 Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards will be held on 8 February 2018 in Brighton.
