Community celebrates at Devizes Hub opening event

Hundreds of people attended Devizes Community Hub and Library today (Tuesday) to enjoy the official opening event.

The afternoon was a real community celebration, with activities for children, a bake-off cake competition, and superb performances from Devizes Superchoir and St Matthews Junior Choir, Rowde.

John Thomson, cabinet member for communities and libraries, said: "This fantastic new hub is part of Wiltshire Council's programme of investment to create community campuses and hubs across the county.

"We believe it's the right thing to provide community services and flexible space for local groups and businesses to use for events, activities and meetings right in the heart of the town centre.

"We recognise how important libraries are to local communities and we know that people visit libraries for more than borrowing books. They are a safe place for people to access services, advice and many different events and group activities and they play a huge role in helping to bring communities together.

"The hub now offers a wide range of services including libraries, revenues and benefits, registrar, plus advice and access to all council services.

"We have seen a dramatic increase in visitors since the building reopened in July the membership has increased by 16% and visitor figures have increased by more than 60% and we hope to see many more people come to use and enjoy this community space."

The Devizes Hub and Library, on Sheep Street, is a great space for the Devizes community to meet to host activities or events or meetings, with flexible space and rooms available. It also offers library and council services in one place; customers can access our customer and registrations services at the hub.

We will also be introducing the Open+ access system to the hub. This system, which enables you and the community to access the building and its facilities outside of the usual opening hours, has already proved to be a success at other hubs around the county.
