Ashtead Plant Hire Company Ltd pleaded guilty to two offences at Chippenham Magistrates Court on Monday 12 March 2018 after breaching the weight restriction of the Bradford on Avon Town Bridge. The offences took place on 10 August and 11 September 2017.
The company was fined £400 for each offence, Wiltshire Council was awarded £300 costs and a Victim surcharge of £40 also has to be paid. The total penalty was therefore a total of £1140.
Inspector James Brain, said, "We welcome the news that successful prosecutions are taking place. Bradford on Avon Lorry Watch is a joint venture involving the local councils and local volunteers, designed to prevent and educate overweight lorries using the historic Town Bridge in contravention of the weight limit.
"Wiltshire Police rely on the time and efforts of volunteers who report offending vehicles to the Wiltshire Police Lorry Watch Support team. Repeat offender details are passed on to Trading Standards at Wiltshire Council who check the vehicle registration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority.
"Lorry drivers should pay attention to the 18 tonne weight limit and be aware of the consequences when they fail to adhere to the law."
Yvonne Bennett, Wiltshire Council Trading Standards manager, who lead the investigation, said: "This is the result of positive partnership working and the dedication of local volunteers. Our aim is to prevent breaches of the Town Bridge weight restriction and we hope that this successful result will serve as a reminder that a constant disregard for weight restrictions in our communities will not be tolerated."
