Contractor confirmed for redevelopment of Calne Leisure Centre

The new Calne Community Campus has taken a huge step forward with the appointment of MD Group as the main contractor on the project.

The contractor will now begin work on the site in September, with the project expected to be completed in winter 2020.

The £3.4m refurbishment of Calne Leisure Centre will improve the facilities and aid the long-term sustainability of the facility.

The exciting project includes a new fitness suite, which will be double the size of the existing gym, while the wet change facilities will also be entirely revamped, delivering a new changing village. The centre will also be redecorated throughout.

The build will be phased to enable the centre to remain open for the vast majority of the build period. There may be occasions when the centre has to close for a short period of time. When this occurs the public and existing members will be given as much notice as possible via updates on the Wiltshire Council website and through the centre's social media channels.

Allison Bucknell, Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Libraries, said: "Calne Community Campus is an exciting project for the town, and we're delighted to have appointed a contractor to begin work to create a refurbished leisure complex, which will be a real asset to Calne.

"This new campus represents a significant £3.4m investment into the town, and we can't wait for the work to get started in September.

"We know how important leisure services are to our communities, so we're pleased that the current centre will remain open for most of the build to provide a continuity of service to customers."

Paul Coombe, Construction Director for MD Group, said: "MD Group are thrilled to have been appointed to such a prestigious project with far-reaching positive benefits for the local community.

"We look forward to working closely with Wiltshire Council to lead and deliver the Calne Community Campus redevelopment

"MD Group already work locally throughout Wiltshire, and are delighted to be able to continue providing local employment in the area, especially on a project of this nature which delivers straight back to the heart of the local community."

The first stage of works will include the expansion of the current gym and works to the dry change, front entrance lobby and offices, so the public entrance will be at the rear of the building. There will be clear signage to direct customers and a new pathway will be laid to ensure the route is safe and accessible.

When complete the Campus will be part of a range of first-class facilities in the town. This includes the existing Community Hub and Library in the town centre which was refurbished in 2016, and the 3G all-weather sports pitch at Beversbrook Sports Facility which was funded through a £500,000 contribution from Wiltshire Council before being handed to the town council.
