Autism friendly libraries

We aim to make our libraries as friendly and accessible as possible and to support customers who may need extra help when they are visiting.

Visiting the library

We have created a Guide to using the library (OpenDocument text format) [628KB] (opens new window)  in Wiltshire, if you are planning a visit, or if someone is anxious about coming to the library for the first time.

If you are attending an activity or event with a child we may be able to provide a quiet space, please talk to staff so we can help plan your visit.

Autism books

We have developed an autism book collection (opens new window) with titles suitable for adults, children, teenagers and their parents and carers.

Multi-sensory stories

Our multi-sensory stories are available for loan and can be requested at any library. View a list of multi-sensory stories (PDF) [491KB] (opens new window) and the Suggested reads (opens new window) section of the library catalogue.

Multi-sensory stories contain various objects and other items that can be interacted with e.g. touched, moved, smelt, worn, played with; and relate to simple stories. These books are handmade by the charity Bag Books (opens new window). They are presented in a large box and can be borrowed like a regular book.
