Families Reading Every Day

Families Reading Every Day (FRED)

Reading together is one of the best ways you can help your child – and have fun.

If you read together often, your child is likely to become a better reader and do better in school. Studies show there are lots of positive effects for children if dads (or other male family members) read regularly to them, including:

  • More likely to have better attendance at school
  • Likely to have higher self-esteem and confidence and find it easier to make friends
  • More likely to go on to higher education... and earn more as an adult!
  • How important it is to read daily with your child
  • How important you are as your child’s first teacher
  • How to have fun reading together

This course is for any adult family member or carer who would like to support their school-aged children, although younger children are welcome to join in too.

A small group of other parents/carers will be taking part in the programme alongside you and you’ll all start off together with a fun 1½ hr session where you can sign up to take the FRED challenge. During the 4 weeks your tutor will contact you by text or email with encouragement and support, reading tips, useful websites and fun activity ideas to try at home. You can contact your tutor too. At the end of the 4 weeks you’ll all come together again for another 1½ hour session to celebrate the reading you’ve done and you’ll get a certificate to show that you have successfully completed the challenge.

Families Reading Every Day (FRED) is a 4 week programme designed to support the habit of reading everyday to your children. It’s really easy to follow and you’ll be amazed at the results! We’ll ask you to read to your children for at least 10 minutes a day for the first 2 weeks and at least 20 minutes a day for the next two weeks.

Funding is available to cover the cost of this course so it will be free for you to attend. The funding does not support paid carers of other children to attend, unless attending with their own child.

You will be asked to fill in a short form at the start and a quick questionnaire at the end. You and your child will have a reading log to fill in together and bring to the celebration event. This records and supports your learning journey and successes.

If you have 5 GCSEs grades A to C (5 O Levels) this course may not be suitable for you. Please contact us if you require further details; we’d love to hear from you
