Family functional skills

This 20 week course is about helping you to brush up on your maths skills to give you the skills and confidence to be able to help yourself and your family.

What will I learn?

  • You will share fun and hands-on activities and brush up on your own maths skills at the same time
  • You will be able to take a Functional Skills maths qualification at a level to suit you (Entry 1 to Level 2)
  • You will refresh your own maths skills in three areas: number, statistics and measures
  • You will increase your confidence in your ability to help your child to develop their numeracy and problem-solving skills

What’s this course about? 

This 20 week course is about helping you to brush up on your English skills to give you the skills and confidence to be able to help yourself and your family. 

What will I learn? 

  • You will share fun and hands-on activities and brush up on your own English skills at the same time
  • You will be able to take a Functional Skills English qualification at a level to suit you (Entry 1 to Level 2) 
  • You will refresh your own English skills in three areas: speaking, listening and communication; reading; writing
  • You will increase your confidence in your ability to help your child to develop their English and communication skills

The courses are for parents and carers who wish to improve their everyday maths or English skills and to be able to support their child’s learning in this area.  Any adult family member or carer who would like to support their children’s learning is welcome.

These are small, classroom-based courses where you’ll learn together and take part in practical group activities, all in a relaxed and friendly environment. You will have some maths or English tasks to do at home.

The maths or English courses provides 40 hours of learning delivered over 20 weeks in short 2-hour sessions, once a week.  You’ll need to complete at least 15 sessions in a subject to be able to take the qualification.

Funding is available to cover the cost of the course so it will be free for you to attend. There may be free childcare by prior arrangement.

You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course. This will record and support your learning journey and successes. You will be able to take a Functional Skills maths or English qualification at one of 5 levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 or Level 2).  The qualification consists of a single assessment covering the following three areas (number, statistics and measures).

Employed or Unemployed

Resident in the UK or EU for 3 years
