The Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award, giving millions of 14- to 24-year-olds the opportunity to be rewarded for the activities they do in their spare time. The activities are chosen by the participants themselves and can broaden horizons, skills and friendships. It’s a fun and rewarding journey where young people grow in confidence and become more independent.
Achieving a DofE Award opens doors to education and employment opportunities, as it is well respected by educators and employers, and provides young people with a structure to demonstrate their non-academic skills and character. Open to anyone aged 14 to 24 (not just fans of the great outdoors), the DofE encourages teamwork and social interaction and helps young people to stand out from the crowd when applying for university and jobs. Participants will volunteer, get fit, learn, go on expeditions. It’s one amazing adventure after another that they will never forget.Close
There are three levels of programme which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The main differences between them are the minimum length of time they take to complete, how challenging they are and the minimum age you can start.
Activities for each DofE section (Volunteering, Physical and Skill) take a minimum of one hour a week over a set period of time, so they can be fitted in around academic study, hobbies and social lives. Development and regular progress must be shown and all activities must be completed by the participant’s 25th birthday.Close
You’ll find the DofE in a variety of places including schools, colleges and universities; in youth organisations like the Scouts, Guides and Army Cadet Force; in young offender institutions and prisons; and in businesses and local authorities.
In Wiltshire, we currently have the DofE Award running in 31 mainstream schools, seven special schools, three colleges and five voluntary sector groups. Wiltshire Council holds the licence that these centres operate under, and employs a staff team to support, train and assist leaders and oversee delivery.Close
